According to NYTIMES.com, Twenty-two years ago there was a debate on this campus among university officials about whether Tennessee’s women’s basketball team should move with the men’s program to the new 24,000-seat Thompson-Boling Arena or stay in the quaint Stokely Center a block.
Would there have to be tarps to cover the upper deck so the place would not look so empty when the women played? Would there be more echoes than cheers with crowds that might number no more than 3,000?
On Thursday night, there were no echoes, just cheers, and the debate about the program’s popularity has been left far behind thanks to the tall, slender woman on the Tennessee Lady Vols’ sideline.
Pat Summitt, the women’s basketball coach, won her 1,000th game, which many feel is a milestone that will not be reached by another college basketball coach. The chant “One thousand” from the crowd of 16,058 started with 40 seconds to play. When the horn sounded in a 73-43 win over Georgia, orange and white streamers fell from the ceiling, and the throng roared again.
